Uru For Mac Follow-up

Now that I have used Uru on Mac for a day or so, I’m writing a follow-up review. All in all, it’s much better than trying to deal with Vista on unsupported hardware, and it performs about the same as the windows client does, which is good. There is no noticable lag (I got a tiny bit in the hood, but it was momentary), link times were not extreme, downloads for ages are decent…They’re slightly faster than on Vista, actually…but again, my wifi card is not supported with Vista drivers yet so that could be the problem.

One annoyance though. It doesn’t do windowed mode. You have to run it full-screen, and you don’t have nearly all the resolutions the windows client does. I had to use 1280×800 (as opposed to the 1440×900 that is the native for my default monitor, or the 1650×1080 for my external), which isn’t horrible but it looks blurry. Oh well.

Also just a general Uru gripe, dual monitors are useless, you can only use the primary one. Which is annoying when your secondary is so much bigger (15″ vs 22″, 22″ wins). It’s even more annoying when said fullscreen app renders the secondary monitor useless, since it blacks it out too and doesn’t let the cursor go over it. Whatever.

All in all, Uru for Mac is a great thing, and a long-awaited development, I think (since Uru was the only Myst game not compatible with Mac, not counting the fact that it’s next to impossible to run any of them on Intel macs…). If it had windowed mode it would be perfect.

Uru For Mac – Released!

Cyan has finally released its Mac client for URU! Hooray! I’m downloading it as I type this, but here are some shots of what I have so far:
the mac updater for uru
The updater

uruicons
The icons on the dock. There are two, the shown updater and one named ‘Myst Online’, the actual name of the app.

So yeah, it’s still updating, but I’m hoping that there’ll only be one icon on the dock when it’s actually running (not updating), I like my dock as uncluttered as possible. But the new icon is mad pretty:
Uru icon
The new ΓΌber shiny icon :3

UPDATE: Not sure why I didn’t do this before, but I realized that anybody interested in this post will probably be interested in running Uru: Complete Chronicles on a Mac as well. Happy Mysting.

Told ya, Kato…

Well, the Uru for Mac client was, in fact, not released this week, as prophesied by Kato. I love hate to say I told ya so, but…

Uru For Mac

Well, it’s official now. In a few weeks, us Mac users will be able to play uru on our macs, provided they are Intel-based. There’s a mac beta right now, but it’s private (invitation only), so I haven’t gotten a chance to experience it yet, but I really can’t wait until I won’t have to reboot to use Uru…That will be awesome.

Also, Uru Live was officially launched (taken out of beta) on the 15th, and a new age called Eder Tsogahl should be released very very soon. Hooray hooray…

Edit: Kato is right, I just checked and Eder Tsogahl is indeed already out. Thanks, man.

Edit 2: Fine, the Mac client is supposed to be released ‘next’ week, meaning this week. Now stop bothering me Kato, and don’t say I didn’t tell you so when it is delayed πŸ˜‰

How True

I came across this quote on Uru Obsession, and the original poster found it on eBay, I think. The first few lines are so true:

I used to think of myself as immune to addiction. I’ve never been ensnared by alcohol or drugs, never run up huge credit-card balances with compulsive shopping, never smoked — I don’t even gamble. Watching various friends battle their own habits, I’ve occasionally envied them the drama of it all, but mostly I’ve felt a little (well, maybe more than a little) superior.

That was before I found Myst…

I’ve recently realized just how obsessed I am with the Myst series. I really am obsessed. I spend most of my free time on Uru Obsession, I have a massive collection of Myst games and collectible items, I even have two original concept sketches from Myst.

In a discussion I was having with a friend of mine two days ago, I mentioned how much more obsessed with the series I was than him (however, we met on UO, so we both must be pretty obsessed) and he said “yeah, I’m not as obsessed as you are. I get bored the third time through the games”. This made me stop and realize the extent of my obsession.

Am I sorry? Do I wish I wasn’t obsessed/addicted?

Hell no.

DRC Liasons, Part Deux

The DRC Liasons are the members of the Myst community who act as a link between the DRC and the community. Well, I’ve been nominated to be a candidate to become one of the 5 DRC Liasons. Pretty sweet. Vote for me! πŸ™‚ I’m working on my campaign material at the moment… πŸ™‚

Galamay 2

Today I’m releasing Galamay Area 2/Version 2. It’s a custom-made age for Uru Complete Chronicles that I’ve been working on for more than 7 months, and I’m finally releasing it. To download it, get the Uru Age Manager and download it from there. For more information about Galamay, visit the Galamay Log (It’s In Character, so might not provide much information). Happy exploring!

RAWA and the Town Hall Delay

All you Uru fans out there know about the Town Hall meetings. They are meetings between the Myst/Uru fan community and members of Cyan Worlds or the DRC (D’ni Restoration Council, which is Cyan’s In-Character group and the focal point of the Uru Live storyline). There is currently a Town Hall meeting taking place on the D’mala shard in the Town Hall Neighborhood, with Rand Miller (one of the founders of Cyan Worlds and the current CEO, I think). This meeting was originally planned for yesterday, but RAWA (Richard A. Watson, another very influential and senior member of Cyan Worlds) posted the following on the official forums two or three days ago:

I’m very sorry to have to announce this, but something has come up and the Town Hall with Rand needs to be postponed by 24 hours. It will now be held on Tuesday, July 18, at 9am Cavern Time.

It’s postponed for a nice reason, and hopefully you’ll agree that it was worth the extra 24 hour wait.

RAWA

This of course got everyone very excited, because we (being the community we are) automatically jump to conclusions and assume the best. Uru Live Beta is starting! However, now the meeting is going on and RAWA has posted this:

The “surprise” for tomorrow’s town hall is not going to happen tomorrow after all. Due to circumstances beyond Cyan’s control, the earliest it can happen will be late next week. The C.O. Meter will be knocked down a few notches to commiserate the delay.

Argh! Ok so we have to wait another week until we get out surprise. Oh well. Oh and the C.O. Meter is the Cautious Optimism Meter, which is what we Uru fans are supposed to have. Cautious optimism. Screw that, says I. I predicted the return of live, and even got the date for the announcment right. I’ve known that it would come back from the moment Cyan got back on their feet. I don’t have an ounce of Cautious Optimism in my blood, just full blown optimism. : D AND I’M PROUD OF IT!

Agebuilder.org Update

*Phew* After one day, forum.agebuilder.org and www.agebuilder.org are back online, with no hackers or malware present. I would recommend a virus scan on your computer anyway, especially if you’re using IE. πŸ˜‰

Agebuilder.org Hacked!

Agebuilder.org, the hub of Age Creation for Uru, has been hacked…again. This time, the site has been given a .exe malware file that auto-downloads when you visit the site, so DO NOT VISIT AGEBUILDER.ORG! Thankfully no posts or wiki info were lost, but the site is currently inaccessible to anyone who doesn’t want a virus.

I’m an admin there, so I feel responsible, but there are multiple people working on it now, and I’ll hinder more than I’ll help.

This seems to be a trend now. This is the second hack against Agebuilder.org, plus the DJC was hacked not long ago and of course COBBS lost everything a year ago. There has been an increase of spambots as well. People seem to be plotting against the Myst community…:(
