How to Change Your Boot Image on a Mac

I was recently asked (in a comment on this post how to change the image that appears when a Mac boots up. I was wondering this recently myself, and I came across the absolutely excellent BootXChanger app. You give it a .PNG file of the image you want, press ‘Apply’, and it swaps the image for you. You can even customize the color of the background around the image. Next time you turn on the computer, you’ll see your image instead of the Apple logo.

“But Zib,” you ask, “what are you using for your boot image?”

What do you think?

Beautiful… but NOT a great idea if you ever run into hardware trouble or critical system problems. Just makes troubleshooting that tad more difficult when it’s the most important.

Well, so far I haven’t had any problems with it, and I don’t see any reason why it would void a warrantee, but it’s true, any modification of this sort does carry some amount of risk.

I mean… when or if you run into problems, you want as few strange/unnecessary customizations as possible to troubleshoot and rule out. It probably wont cause any problems, but if you never did it in the first place and do run into problems you don’t need to even consider it and you can focus on the real problem.
