Bowtie and Coversutra – Match Made in Heaven

I’ve posted about CoverSutra before, specifically about its appearance. I didn’t like the default look of the search bar or desktop album art, so I found a collection of modifications that created an interface I liked.

A few days ago I discovered a program with similar abilities to CoverSutra, called Bowtie. It provides a window which one can use to control iTunes, and the bonus of Bowtie over CoverSutra is its skinability. It comes with 11 skins by default, but by looking around the MacThemes Forums, one can find many, many more great themes.

I was considering switching over to Bowtie completely, especially considering that it’s free, but it lacked a few things that CoverSutra has, which I think are very necessary. The first of these, and the most apparent to me, is the lack of a ‘hide from dock’ option, resulting in it always taking up space on the dock, even though it’s a very small app, and doesn’t really warrant a dock icon. A menu bar item, like CoverSutra uses, would be much better for this kind of application. This inadequacy can be remedied, however, with a small app called Dock Dodger, which can hide any application from the dock and cmd+tab switcher.

The other feature Bowtie lacks is the ability to search through the iTunes library, which is pretty much the core of CoverSutra. Upon this realization, it became clear that running Bowtie and CoverSutra side-by-side was definitely a viable option. Using Dock Dodger, I have Bowtie hidden in the background, so that I can use its interface instead of CoverSutra’s desktop album art (the Bowtie theme called ‘Wet Floor’ is really good for this usage), while I continue to use CoverSutra as my main music navigator.

As a final note, I feel I should mention that up until Bowtie, I still used my perennial favorite utility, Quicksilver, for my iTunes-related hotkey needs. CoverSutra’s hotkeys work great, but I found that there was no way to get the CoverSutra notification under the menu bar to appear when using CoverSutra’s own hotkeys to change the song, so I refrained from using them. However, Quicksilver hotkeys can be somewhat sluggish at first, and Bowtie loads faster at boot-up than Quicksilver, so I recently moved my play/pause and next/previous hotkeys over to Bowtie, and my increase/decrease volume & rating hotkeys to CoverSutra. This setup has treated me well so far, and I’m very happy with it.

I Would Now Buy a Zune

after watching a video of the New Zune Interface, I can no longer claim to not like the zune. It is almost as thin as an iPod, and very sexy. They’ve dropped brown as a color choice, opting for shiny, shiny black for the 80gb version and green (olive green), pink, silver, and black for the 4/8gb.

The new ‘zunepad’ interface looks very nice, not as intuitive as a touchscreen, but more intuitive than an iPod Wheel.

But, of course I won’t be getting one. It’s not even a possibility, since Microsoft is still not offering Macs any compatibility.

New iPods!

Apple announced the 6th gen iPod today, as well as the 3rd gen nano. The 6th gen iPod is actually 2 different things, the iPod Classic (almost identical to the 5th gen, except with up to 160gb of storage) and the way cooler iPod touch, which is like an iPhone without the phone part. It even has WiFi for downloading songs and surfing the net and stuff. Über. The 3rd gen nano is much wider than the 2nd gen, and has video capabilities. It’s also really really thin.

Optical Speaker Recommendations?

I’m looking into purchasing an item which has optical speaker ports and no analog out, so to use sound I’d have to get optical speakers. Does anyone know of a good speaker set for under or around $50 which has optical input? I really don’t care if it’s surround sound or anything, I’d actually rather just have a stereo set, it just has to have optical input.

His Steveness hates DRM just like the rest of us.

His Steveness posted an article on DRM (Digital Rights Management, the thing that prevents you from putting digital music on multiple computers, or listening to iTunes-bought music on anything but an iPod) on the Apple website earlier today. He says that there are only 3 ways Apple can go with the DRM from here:

  • The DRM system remains the same,
  • Apple lets other companies license their DRM stuff (which would allow other mp3 players to play iTunes music)
  • or

  • The music industry abandons DRM completely
  • He (and most of us, I think) states that the third choice is the best, since it would free up music a lot. He calls for the 4 major recording companies to abandon their DRM, and then Apple will drop the iTunes DRM, which would be awesome. This is actually a gutsy move by Apple, since if they did drop their DRM, they would possibly lose some of the people they currently have locked into iTunes and the iPod if their music was playable by other software and players.

I have one thing to say.

    GO STEVE!

    SNL

I’m watching Saturday Night Live right now, waiting for Tenacious D to appear, and I have to say…This show really sucks compared to the first 6 or 7 seasons, or even compared to 3 years ago. I love the fact that there are a bunch of actors I know on it (Keenan of Good Burger (the unfunny, fat one 😉 ), Andy of The Lonely Island, etc.), but that alone doesn’t make it comedy. I’m only watching because of Tenacious D.

Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny

I recently saw The Pick of Destiny with a bunch of friends, and I must say I was actually slightly disappointed. I’m a huge fan of Jack Black and his band Tenacious D, but the movie was just not as good as I had hoped it would be. I really liked the beginning and the rock training, but after they officially form and name the band (I love the ass mark scene) there are very few good parts, the highlights being the shroom scene and the break-in. The duel with Satan was great, and the very end was awesome if you liked the song Tribute, which I did. The drama about their breakup and getting back together seemed like drama for drama’s sake, and didn’t add to the story at all, same with the car chase.

Don’t get me wrong, it was a great movie. It just didn’t accomplish what I expected of it.

    Zune Pix

Took a visit to Best Buy today, snapped a few pix of the brown Zune they had on display there. I have to say, the brown looks good in person, and I totally forgot about the FM tuner in my first Zune post. Woops!

Two annoying things about Best Buy’s PMP stand:

    1. All the PMPs were completely strapped down, unlike before when they were on cables so you could pick them up and stuff.
    2. None of them have headphones, so I couldn’t tell if the Zune really does have higher audio quality or not.
