Geese

I went with my girlfriend to feed some old bread to the geese that live down my street yesterday, and figured I should bring my camera. I got some pretty good pictures, but let me just say this: geese are vicious.

This guy kept attacking other geese and hissing at us for more bread. He had a metal ring on his ankle:

I wonder if that has something to do with it? Perhaps the park rangers marked which ones are really aggressive? Maybe that one is the alpha male? Do geese even have alpha males? I have no idea.

All I know is that teenage goslings are very cute:

New Theme, Sandpress

I installed a new theme yesterday, called Sandpress. It’s by Arpit Jacob, and I think it’s very pretty. I noticed that the search box on K2 (my old theme) was no longer working, and I was also just kind of bored of the way the whole site looked, so I spent most of yesterday shopping around for new themes, and came across this one.

However, it seems to have a problem with the sidebars, at least on my computer.

Here’s how it’s supposed to look:
How it's supposed to look

But sometimes it looks like this:
How it actually looks, sometimes

And if you scroll all the way down, the second sidebar is at the bottom:
The other sidebar, at the bottom

Does anyone else see this? For some reason it only seems to happen to me, and only when using Firefox. And even then, only sporadically. If the site looks broken to you, e-mail me or drop a comment here.

Boston Apple Store Opens!

The New Apple Store

I went to the opening of the Boylston Street Apple Store yesterday, and got a free shirt! It’s green and resembles the teaser signs that were covering the windows a week ago. Also received a free red iPod Sock, with the date embroidered on the tag. It’s actually larger than the old socks I was using, my iPod Touch can actually fit in it.

Red iPod sock

The line was about a 2 hour wait, but very much worth it. The inside of the store is beautiful, lots of glass and steel. Very Apple. The entire staff (hundreds of people, way more than one would expect, even for the second largest Apple Store in the world) ran by us at one point while we were in line and got people to cheer and clap for them, and then they returned the favor for us when we got inside. The staff was literally lining the stairs and surrounding the door, clapping and cheering everyone who came in the store on.

Apple staff cheers on the guests

The store itself is extremely large. The first floor is all laptops (with at least 3 tables of MacBook Airs alone), the second is desktops, iPods, and iPhones, and the third floor is entirely customer service (with multiple demo stands for classes and other events, and a gigantic genius bar, spanning the entire wall). The centerpiece, the glass stairs, is extremely cool, with frosted steps with some sort of rubberized grip to stop people from slipping, I guess.

The glass stairs

The best thing about this Apple Store is that it’s the first one that I can actually walk to. It’s right around the corner from the Hynes T stop, whereas all the other Massachusetts stores are in malls.

As always, more pictures can be found in my gallery

Boston Apple Store Shaping Up (Again)

When I was on the IFO Apple Store website today, I came across this picture of the soon-to-be Boylston St. Apple Store:

Boston Apple Store Shaping Up

As you can see on the Birth Of An Apple Store site, the Apple Store outside the Hynes is shaping up pretty well. I’ve walked past it a few times to check it out, and apparently a giant Apple logo has now been installed:

I’ll be at the grand opening, whenever it’s announced.

Leopard Unboxing

Because Hannah asked for it, here‘s my gallery of the (somewhat uninteresting) unboxing and installation of Leopard.

A Very Scratched Disc

My computer’s disc drive is not the most reliable in the world. I’ve found that to successfully burn something, I have to do it at 2x or 4x speed, as opposed to the 24x that it is capable of.

Anyway, when a burn fails (as they often do), I enjoy taking out my anger on the disc in question. Usually by completely maiming its pristine, shiny underside with a key.

Here’s my latest failed burn, which occurred about a month ago (I rarely burn things to disc). I think it’s actually very pretty.

Lame Staples CD Packaging

I just bought a ’75 disc’ pack of CD-R’s at my local Staples, and upon unpackaging it, I discovered this:

I smell cheap-o manufacturers who don’t want to make a smaller spindle for the 75 pack… The bottom of the spindle was broken, too. As a result, the cover doesn’t stay on them. Oh well, at least I got 75 discs for the cheaps.
