Yellow Aqua Buttons?

Upon opening the ‘print’ dialog in Preview.app today, I noticed this button near the bottom:
Yellow button?

A standard Aqua button, but yellow. I’ve never seen this before. My printer is low on yellow ink, so maybe the button changes color depending on what ink is low? That is very cool.

Gametap Expired!

My Gametap subscription just expired, after a year of having it. I hadn’t even been thinking of it as a subscription-based service, because I bought a whole year’s worth. Now I have to fork over $60 to keep playing…Bummer…
Uru, bugging me to re-subscribe

How to Unify Firefox (The Simple Way)

Firefox 3 beta 1 was released today, and it’s pretty cool. Support for animated pngs, smooth scrolling, lots of stuff. It uses native aqua form widgets (as in, check boxes and buttons and such are aqua now), and best of all, has a unified theme. It’s not built-in, though. Here’s how to install it:

  • Download this file (this is the theme)
  • Go to Tools > Add-ons
  • Go to Themes
  • Drag the file you downloaded from your desktop to the Add-on window
  • OK anything that pops up, restart Firefox
  • Go back to the theme selection window, and select ‘use this theme’ for Proto. Restart again

And now you should have sweet, sweet, unified Firefox-y goodness:
woot

Oh, also: most of your plugins will probably be broken, so I strongly recommend getting the Nightly Tester Tools Plugin, which (once installed) allows you to make almost all of your disabled plugins compatible with Firefox 3.

How to Fix Broken Screenshots in Leopard

WOOT! I can now take screenshots in Leopard, thanks to this fix! Here’s what to do if your screenshot thinger is broken:

  • Open Terminal.app (it’s in Applications/Utilities)
  • Type this:
    open ~/Library/Preferences/.GlobalPreferences.plist
  • When the window pops up, open root and find AppleDisplayFactor (it should be the second one)
  • Select this, and press the Delete button
  • Save, Quit
  • You can quit Terminal.app as well

Now try taking a screenshot, and it should appear on your desktop like it used to!
Thanks a ton to Shaahin for helping me figure this out!

Leopard Annoyances

These are my annoyances, meaning small problems. Not show-stoppers by any means, and all things that could easily fixed though patches/hacks.

1. Time Machine does not allow you to even open the UI unless the disk is plugged in.

2. Adium windows do not behave correctly in spaces (I set them to ‘every space’, they have a tendency to stick to one)

3. Half-assed 512×512 icon support. Ok, the .icns format now supports 512×512 icons, but if you don’t give us the option to view them that big in finder (without hacks, which I discovered today), what’s the point? Yeah, coverflow. I WANT MY ICONS GIANT! 😀

4. Stacks can not be viewed in fan mode when the dock is on the sides

Apart from these 4 little things (2 being the worst by far), I’m absolutely loving Leopard so far. I take back what I said earlier about it being slow, it’s just as zippy as Tiger was after a few restarts.

Edit: OH and 5. I can’t take screenshots. This is a very, very, very annoying problem, but it seems like it’s a problem only I have, not a wide-spread thing. I can even do it on other accounts, but on my main one it just doesn’t take em. ;_;

Keyboard Issues

My computer is having some very strange issues. Specifically with the keyboard. Every now and then it will simply stop responding (the keyboard that is). The computer works fine, but the keyboard is completely dead. Plugging in an external keyboard works fine, but the built-in one is dead for a few minutes before randomly coming back. x_x I have no idea what to do…

I Found a Bug

One of the cool features of Leopard is the guest account, which creates a brand new account for guests, and obliterates all traces of it once they’ve logged out. Very handy.

Anyway, when logging out of the guest account, I was confronted with this message box:
Check out that title

Leopard Impressions

Ok well let me start by saying that Leopard does not offer any performance increases unless you have a 64 bit processor. This has been stated before, but it really is true. My computer is no faster than it was under Tiger, if anything its slower. I’ll get more ram and hopefully that will sort it out.

Secondly, it runs hot. Apple finally wised up and made the fan speed adjust according to temperature, but honestly I would prefer if they just let me control them myself like I did before, because averaging at 65Ëš C is not acceptable.

But aside from those two factors, Leopard kicks ass! It’s really just plain sexy. I can’t wait to get some downloads-stack love from Firefox…Coverflow in Finder is awesome and very responsive (videos not as much as images), the new dock is pretty, the translucent menubar is cool, the new Photobooth features are pretty cool, Spaces kicks so much ass…It’s all in all a very solid update, methinks.

But the fans not running fast enough is getting pretty annoying…
