Dead Theme

My blog’s theme died for a bit yesterday and today. Should be working again now πŸ™‚

I’m working some more on zPhoto, trying to get a stained glass filter working… More on that when it happens.

I’ve gotten back into Flash (I got a cheap-o copy of Flash 5 back when it was only 1 version old…), and am currently writing a basic game engine in Actionscript. It’s difficult, but I’ve already made more progress than the last time I tried to do this, where I worked for about a week and I never got jumping working. I just need to tweak it a bit so the guy doesn’t bounce down the slopes, but slides. Throw in some animation, and presto! A basic game. Then I need enemies, bosses, items, netcode, etc. etc. etc. The whole thing was inspired by The Fancy Pants Adventure, a really good flash game where you run around and off ramps and stuff. I’m not aiming for that kind of quality, that game is amazing. Half that quality would be my best work ever.

Newest Member of the Family

I bought a Red 4gb iPod Nano a few days ago, with “It’s a series of tubes!” engraved on the back. I really love it, it is way better than my old shuffle. And it can hold about twice as much music as I actually have, so it’s perfect.

I was bored today (I have strep, so I’m at home sick), and decided to make a dock for my new iPod out of the cardboard box it came in and other various things it came with. You can check it out here:

Credit to this gallery for the idea, I used the exact same method but modded a tiny bit for the nano πŸ™‚

zPhoto Update

I’ve decided to call my aforementioned Photo Booth hack zPhoto. And I’ve updated it.

New:

  • “Dots” monochrome/halftone effect
  • Release as an actual application (no resources diving/replacing, just unzip the file)
  • New ‘countdown’ icons. They’re fun. πŸ˜‰

Known Issues:

  • Blobs still won’t take pictures.
  • It’s technically still just a Photo Booth hack, so I’m not even sure if this is legal.
  • It still calls itself Photo Booth when running

If you know how to fix any of the above, please leave a comment or email me!

Get zPhoto HERE!
Just unzip it and put zPhoto.app in the Applications folder. As always, make a backup of Photo Booth first, just in case… But it shouldn’t matter.

Note: This is based completely off of Photo Booth, and thus has the same requirements as Photo Booth. I don’t know what those are, but this is a Universal Binary. I guess you need a computer with iSight, but I really don’t know. Sorry!

Hacking PhotoBooth

I recently figured out how to open the Photo Booth effects in Quartz Composer. Simply view the package contents of photobooth.app, then it’s Video.qtz under resources. But whenever I modified anything, it seemed to either freeze or take no effect.

Well, after a day or two of heavy experimentation with the file, I’ve managed to successfully put my own effects into Photo Booth:

Photo Booth Hacks

For those that don’t use Photo Booth often enough to notice the new effects, I’ve added Edges, Pixelly, Trippy, and Blobs. There’s also Kaleidoscope in the second panel, which you can see in the image tray at the bottom. Blobs doesn’t actually work when taking pictures yet, it just produces an all-white image. It looks cool, though πŸ˜›

If you want to try out these effects for yourself, you can follow these steps:

  1. Duplicate Photo Booth.app – this hack overwrites some of the original effects, so you must make a duplicate if you ever want to use Sepia, Thermal, Mirror, or X-Ray again!
  2. Rename the duplicate something besides Photo Booth Copy.app
  3. Download this file
  4. Ctrl+Click the new Photo Booth.app and say ‘view package contents’
  5. Go to resources
  6. Move the downloaded file to the resources file, click ‘replace’ when the box pops up
  7. Go back to the applications folder and double-click the new Photo Booth.app
  8. Enjoy your new effects!

If you figure out how to make blobs take a picture correctly, please tell me.

Note: This hack will not change the labels for the effects panels. To do this, you have to edit Video1.strings and Video2.strings in Photo Booth duplicate.app/Resources/english.lproj using a text editor.

Told ya, Kato…

Well, the Uru for Mac client was, in fact, not released this week, as prophesied by Kato. I love hate to say I told ya so, but…

Vista Stuff

Well, now that I have Windows Vista it’s time for a review. So far I like Vista a lot, it’s very shiny and good-looking. Many things are still the same as with XP, and some stuff is left over that doesn’t even do anything (ClearType options are still there, but they do nothing). So far I’ve only used a few programs that are incompatible with Vista. They were the Boot Camp drivers (made for XP, some don’t work that hot in Vista…) and (sadly) Trillian. The first time I ran it, Vista complained that Trilly couldn’t use Aero, so it disabled Aero for the whole system while Trilly is open. Even though I have now set Trilly to run without Aero, Vista still turns the glass effects (which are ΓΌber cool, by the way) off when I launch it. Oh well, I’ll figure it out eventually.

The biggest problem I’ve had so far is (I think) due to the airport card drivers. It doesn’t seem to recognize my wifi at all, since my wifi doesn’t always broadcast its name. In OS X, you just tell it to connect to the name and it does, but in Vista you can only add the network to your list of automatic networks and wait for it to find it. Since it never finds the network, it won’t connect, and since there’s no way to manually connect to a network without a broadcasting name, I’m basically screwed.

Also, I’d like to be able to use my Boot Camp partition through Parallels, so I can try out Coherence and use Trillian in OS X, but I can’t figure out how to use a Boot Camp partition as a virtual machine. Does anyone know how to do this?

Mystery Packages 3 and 4 Part 2

Thanks for that beautiful spoiler, Cutter. Just for that, I’m not linking to you πŸ˜›

Anyway, I finally got around to making a Tabblo of the unboxing of my two newest toys, a WD Mybook 320gb Premium and Windows Vista Ultimate. They’re very fun so far, I kept the Mybook with its Fat32 formatting, since its only limitation is that it cannot hold files larger than 4gb. It’s cross-platform, which is what I really need. And it’s actually 300gb, but whatever. Thats still plenty.

So anyway, here are the photos.

The Mybook is good, but the capacity LEDs have so much bleed that it’s pretty much impossible to read them. Oh well, there’s only 5gb used on it so they shouldn’t be on at all…And it produces a low hum (it is a hard drive, after all), which is amplified by my desk, unless I lay it on its side. That’s ok though, since it was designed to go horizontally or vertically.

Mystery Packages 3 and 4

I got 2 more mysterious (for you, at least) packages today…One was in a small bubble-wrap pouch and the other in a mid-sized cardboard box. Both are computer-related, and photos will be up by this time tomorrow. Ain’t I a stinker?

My First Cocoa App

Today I made my first Cocoa-based App for OS X. It’s called PieText.app, and is a very very simple text editor. It’s features are rich text, printing, a ‘clear all text’ button, and a special limited edition button, the Pie button. It prints a special message in the document.

It’s extremely basic, yes, but I figured out how to use XCode and make this app using this tutorial and this one. They are very well written and illustrated, and best of all, there are no prerequisites to doing them, no coding skillz or anything, they will teach you what you need to know.

There’s only two so far, but there’s a (not so) subtle hint that he’ll write more if people donate money to him.

Uru For Mac

Well, it’s official now. In a few weeks, us Mac users will be able to play uru on our macs, provided they are Intel-based. There’s a mac beta right now, but it’s private (invitation only), so I haven’t gotten a chance to experience it yet, but I really can’t wait until I won’t have to reboot to use Uru…That will be awesome.

Also, Uru Live was officially launched (taken out of beta) on the 15th, and a new age called Eder Tsogahl should be released very very soon. Hooray hooray…

Edit: Kato is right, I just checked and Eder Tsogahl is indeed already out. Thanks, man.

Edit 2: Fine, the Mac client is supposed to be released ‘next’ week, meaning this week. Now stop bothering me Kato, and don’t say I didn’t tell you so when it is delayed πŸ˜‰
