Voyage of the Damned

The Dr. Who Christmas special, entitled Voyage of the Damned, aired yesterday in Great Britain, and I just got around to downloading/watching it. This is the first new episode I’ve watched, since I started watching just after season 3 finished, and I must say, I was impressed. The visual quality was superb, the action intense, the humor…humorous, and so on and so forth.

(Continued, with spoilers and all, below)

The only thing I didn’t like was the little red cyborg guy, and Astrid’s sluttyness. As soon as she found out he was a cyborg (where did this seemingly universal cyborg discrimination come from? This was the first time I’d heard about it…), they were instantly engaged, and then after he died she was suddenly in love with The Doctor, enough that she gave her life for him. It just seemed a bit unrealistic to me.

The trailer for Season 4 was very interesting as well. It shows several things that we already knew about the upcoming season, such as the fact that Donna (from last year’s Christmas special, The Runaway Bride) returns as The Doctor’s companion, and that Martha does make an appearance later on. It also gives a hint about other things coming soon, such as a woman wielding a Sonic Screwdriver (one that isn’t The Doctor’s, there’s a shot with both of them in it).

One interesting thing to note about the modern revival of Dr. Who is the one-per-season return of classic villains, with Daleks showing up in the first season, Cybermen in the second, and The Master in the third. If this tradition continues, we should see the return of another classic villain in the 4th season, though I have no idea who that could be…We’ll have to wait and see!
